Another consideration is your current level of Magento knowledge: you may not find much value in a beginner-level training course if you’ve been using Magento for years already!
Equally, if you have no Magento knowledge and attempt an advanced Magento administration course, you may well struggle and learn nothing too!
Consider asking your course leader about the typical level of other people in the course if you’re contemplating a shared session.
3. How many people are on the course?
It is also worth considering how many people are undertaking the course alongside you if you book a public Magento training session: you could well be sharing one trainer with 10 people which could be disastrous with poorly planned content!
One to one Magento training can be much more productive with more focus on your learning outcomes, so despite the added expense it is often a better investment of money. Late last year, exciting news for merchants and store owners using the ecommerce platform Magento was announced: the launch of Magento 2.
At Peacock Carter London, we work with Magento almost every day to design, develop, support and help optimise Magento stores for retailers and organisations throughout the world, and Magento 2 is the most significant development in Magento’s path since its release in 2007.
What to expect from Magento 2
Magento’s new version brings a lot of changes. The most noticeable is a totally new, mobile-friendly administration panel:

Other changes and things to look out for in Magento 2 include:
- Better reporting for products and orders in the backend of Magento: great news for merchants!
- A better process for approving Magento extensions via Magento themselves, meaning higher quality extensions
- Better performance: Magento 2 has been built with performance in mind, meaning you should get more from your existing Magento hosting. Full Page Cache (formerly only included in Magento Enterprise Edition) is now in the free to use Magento Community Edition, too.
- New features every 3 months from Magento. Magento will be publishing a roadmap of which new features to expect as they continue to work on functionality
Can I use Magento 2 yet?
We’ve had a lot of contact with merchants and store owners eager to upgrade their stores, or querying if it’s a good idea to migrate to Magento 2 right now (January 2016). Our answer is typically no, Magento 2 is not ready for use with most merchants yet (though there are a small number of live websites using the new version).
This is not because Magento’s second version is unstable: it is because the usual extensions which add key functionality to Magento such as custom shipping charges and payment integrations. Support from Magento themselves for Magento 1.x versions will last for 3 years from the annoucement of Magento 2’s launch (in December 2015), so expect official Magento 1.x support to end in around December 2018. Effectively, this gives you a window of 3 years to migrate your Magento store to Magento 2.
